SQUASH
The
squash season is rapidly drawing to a close, with three weeks of matches
remaining. We have a few teams in with a shout for league honours, including
the Men’s 1st and 2nd league teams. We wish them all the
best for the remainder of the season.
WPCC has
provided two South African representatives for the World Masters Squash,
currently taking place in
Germany.
Our congratulations go to Dawn Kaiser and Glenda Erasmus on their
selection to represent
South
Africa at this tournament, and we shall be
following their results with keen interest.
WPCC was
also well represented in the
Western
Province team selections for the recent Jarvis /
Kaplan Cup interprovincial squash tournament, held in
Durban. WPCC members that were selected by
Western
Province were (Men’s): Christian Hansen,
Mark Reid, Donald Davidson, Justin van der Poel and Andreas Schabort. (Ladies):
Alex Fuller, Lizanne Vlok, Chanel Erasmus and Katie Wilson. A number of these
provincial representatives are still junior members of WPCC, so we expect them
to represent WP for many years to come. Special mention goes to Alex Fuller,
who represented WP’A’ in the A section, even though she is still at school.
Alex won 4 out of her 5 matches at this her first senior provincial appearance.
A most noteworthy achievement.
Our AGM
will be held on Wednesday the 22nd of September, in the Chairman’s
View. This is also the finals night of our WPCC Club Champs, so we anticipate a
notable turnout not just for the AGM, but for finals nights as well. Our
resident professional, Mark Allen, is once again running the Club Champs this
year, which ensures it will be a seamless event. The Club Champs take place
from the 16th to the 22nd of September. There will be a
number of finals taking place that evening, so we welcome all members to our
courts, to see some top class squash across all playing levels. The handicap
tournament has already started, and the final of this will also take place on
the 22nd of September.
DUNCAN
DE GROOT - Chairman
