CRICKET NEWS 12 JANUARY

Well! What an amazing start to the year!

Our first team boy's showed huge character to come back and beat United at the death!

With 5 over's to go all looked lost with about 12 runs per over needed!....But never fear when you have got a bunch of young enthusiasts who never say die and produce the goods when it really counts!

Apart from the fabulous knock by Colin Sher and the contributions of both Martin Walters and Scotty with the bat in walked the unassuming James Crowsen and hit the ball to all corners of the park to secure one of our most famous victories in recent times!

It must be said that it was a team effort with great determination and spirit being showed by all....Well done boy's!

It would also be appropriate to mention Shaun Dyson's efforts with the seconds scoring over 80 runs and also bagging more than his fair share of wickets!

Our club is now in the fortunate position where we have an abundance of players who are good enough to play for our club at the highest level...A really good situation to be in right now.

I would also like to congratulate both Grant Edmeades and Clyde Fortuin for making the preliminary under 19 world cup squad and wish them luck in their quest to gain final selection.

Finally let me remind you that it is the cricket sections happy hour tomorrow night and it would be great to see you all there to kick start which should be a great year for all of us.

CRICKET NEWS 15 December 2011

So far it has been a wonderful cricket season for all……Well done to everyone.

I would like to thank all the players, the administrators and selectors for really making the cricket section proud!

With a new exuberant cricket committee we have come on in leaps and bounds with our approach to selection with specific mention of our attitude towards building for the future by picking players who are still under 17(Clyde )who incidentally has performed like a senior pro!

The Committee itself has done a great job to put the fun back in cricket although some of the players might have taken that fun element a little too far the night before the big game! Be it as it may, I am extremely proud of the spirit amongst the players and there obvious will to win.

We find ourselves well set going into the Christmas break with all the teams having a fair amount of success to date.

I would personally like to mention Kenny Childs for all the hard work done with regards to the weekly selections and then Richard Burnett for his time in making sure the 1st side turned in positive results.

Lastly, to the ground staff who have certainly come to the party…we are all very grateful for the service you have given us…..

On that note I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Travel safe.

CRICKET NEWS 16 Nov

Cricketer of the Month

Congratulations to Jonathan Meintjes for being voted as the cricketer of the month for October!

He almost singled handedly bowled the 1st XI into the 20/20 final to be played at Newlands later this season. His stats were amazing and bowled 53 overs, conceded just 140 runs and took 17 wickets in the process.

It was a very successful evening well attended by most of the cricket sides……Please make an effort this month to stick your heads in at this function as it has the potential to be very successful.

We intend opening the next one up to wives and girlfriends (WAGS) and will attempt to tone down the customary awards fines drinks to encourage longevity of this event…..Music will be provided and emphasis will be on the awards and entertainment of all….Watch this space.

Happy Hour

The Cricket happy hour was also a great success with the NB girls really turning it on to sell a record number of tickets…..Fun was had by all but we intend to continue to improve our reputation to compete against the Hockey section who have always made that particular evening a great success.

Oaks Meeting

The duo of Robin Jackman and Graeme Pollock was a great success and it was wonderful to see the boys in our committee bay on day one of the test….even more entertaining was the lunch with Geoff Boycott in full cry going down memory lane!.....I hear the lunch on the second day lasted over three hours with Trevor Quirk and Pollock keeping the lunch guests enthralled!

League Results

Our teams continue to succeed with an abundance of players and plenty of team spirit….Most of us find ourselves in a commanding position with the 1st XI  having put Claremont in a position of no return….It’s a pleasure to watch. The 2nd XI are in a strong position again Durbanville while the 3rd are in a tense battle with Bonteheuwel on the Wally Wilson.   The weekend will see the 4th XI complete a double header of fixtures, with matches on Saturday and Sunday vs. Edgmead and Tygerberg respectively.

All thanks must go to both Dean and Bradley for their continued support to ensure that the cricket section grows from strength to strength.

LEAGUE RESULTS 02/11/11

WPCC 1st XI vs. United - Vineyard

1st XI did not play due to the wet weather and problems with the covers at the Vineyard.

WPCC 2nd XI vs. Old Mutual – Colin de Jager

The match started late due to bad weather.

WPCC batted first, and were 18/4, but Shawn Dyson 74 and Cuan Cones 63 put on a good partnership to take the side to 160/4.  The 2nd XI declared on 251/8. Robbie Morris also chipped in with 33*.

Old Mutual are currently 140/4 at the end of the days play with 20 overs left in their 1st innings.

WPCC 3rd XI vs. St’ Augustine’s – YMCA

Match was affected by rain, and play could not take place on day 1

WPCC 4th XI vs. Claremont – away

Claremont batted first and scored 130 all out.  Brian Dookoo got 4 wickets, and supported by Graedon Boswell and Chris Landman with 2 each.

WPCC replied with 175/8, with young Khalid scoring 56 and Fuad du Toit getting 30.

3A’s game was called off due to fixture miss-allocation.

HAPPY HOUR

The happy hour will be hosted by the 1st XI this Friday night…amongst the prizes will be a generous assortment of prizes from New Balance including a draw for two pairs of trainers valued at over R500.00 each…There will also be other prizes on offer during the raffle. New Balance has kindly organized two New Balance girls to come along and help us sell tickets on the evening…Come along ,maybe this is your lucky night to take home some of these fabulous prizes!

SPONSOR

Thanks to New Balance who have at this point become the main sponsors of the senior cricket section for the season. Without the help of these organizations it would be very difficult to run our section smoothly.

NEW SCOREBOARD

The new scoreboard is now finished and should be up and running for our first home game in two weeks time. It has been a long process but is much appreciated by the cricket fraternity and I am sure will make life a lot easier for those hapless  individuals who have had the pleasure of trying to handle the old scoreboard!

CRICKETER OF MONTH

The cricketer of the month will take place on Saturday evening after all matches.  We urge all players to come to the bar after matches.

R20K Draw

The date for the draw has been moved to early January.  This is due to the congested events calendar.  We will keep you informed as to the date of the draw.

LEAGUE RESULTS 18/10/2011

Saturday past saw the start of the 2 day competition for all sides in some what gloomy and wet conditions.  Lots of sides were affected by this, and had delayed starts to their matches, but this also meant that winning the toss would be important. The 1st XI was out at Bellville, and fortunately won the toss in the wet conditions.  The bowlers did a great job early up, and restricted Bellville to 154 on a traditionally good batting track, taking maximum bowling points.  Wicket takers there was John Meintjes who is carrying on n his good 20/20 form taking 4 wickets, and was well supported by Tim Florence who picked up 4 and has clearly not lost any of his ability with ball while away in the UK for a bit!  They were ably supported by Ryan van Niekerk.  WPCC replied with a 156/6 at the close of play, with a further 14 over to bat before the 60 over limit. Young James Crowson (13*) and Ryan van Niekerk (31*) are currently at the crease.  Colin, Siya, Kirk and Scotty all made contributions with the bat without kicking on.

The 1st XI were also had a tough 20/20 semi final against Claremont on Sunday.  The batters were on top form, scoring a competitive 165/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Top scorers were Siya on 51, who shared a great partnership with Colin Sher (48) for the second wicket. Kenny Kirkby 22* and Kirk Wernars 24* came in to finish the innings on a high with a quick fire partnership. The bowlers didn’t let the team down, with Ryan van Niekerk taking 2/18 in his 4 overs. John Meintjes and Kirk were in great bowling form taking wickets each, which helped the side restrict Claremont 130/7 in their 20 overs. Skipper Rushdi took what said to be the catch of the tournament thus far, snatching it out of the air at mid wicket.  The team has certainly built on its lessons learnt over the past month or so, and it can clearly be seen in the results they are putting forward. This will see the 1st XI play the final on Newlands, whih will the 1st time in ages that the WPCC will walk onto what was their home ground. The date is still to be confirmed.

The 2nd XI was up against Pinelands in their opening match, and found it hard to take wickets in the was favourable bowling conditions. Pinelands reached 214/8 in their allotted overs.  The 2nd XI did not have the best start to the innings, loosing 3 quick wickets.  They did however recover to reach 155 all out, and then put Pinelands back in to bat, who are 2 wickets down over night.  It will seem day is going to a good battle for the win.

Steven Hodge made his debut as the 3rd XI captain, and found it hard work early on, with on of his bowlers going down due to injury, and had to battle with just 10 fielders for the morning.  They did well to hold United to 145, and the batters took full advantage of a drying wicket and piled on the runs. No one more so than debutant Matthew Laurie, who score 114 for the thirsty 3rds , and was well supported by new boy Jayden Meyer on 48. They are in a strong position with a 120 run lead on the opposition.

Rain certainly held back the start of the 4th XI game, with the guys only taking the field after 2pm, and the 1st innings being reduced to 25 overs each. Rondebosch were out for 85 in their 25, but the home side did well in their innings by scoring a convincing 145. Gareth McKinnon WAS TOP SCORERE WITH 40*, and was well supported bythe middle order who all chipped in with a few runs.

The 3A started their season where thy left off, with another close defeat to GPCP.

The club also have to note the successes of a few of the 1st XI players who selected for the WP Amateur side.  Notably, Mike Rippon, who tool 3/30 on debut in the 3 day side. Top order bat, Martin Walters and opening bowler James starng were also stand out performers for the side.  The section can only benefit from their good showing at the higher level, and when they return it will certainly stand all the teams in good stead!

Saturday sees day 2 of all matches, with 4 of them at home, so come down and support the cricketers on the Deck.

The Xmas break is upon us, and the 1st XI find themselves at the top of the 1A Premier League, with 3 wins and 1 draw out of their 4 league matches.  The young side has done really well under captain Rushdi Hendricks and coach Alan Badenhorst. Congratulations to all who have played a part in the teams success thus far, and may it continue.

The 2nd and 3rd XI have had a mixed bag of results, with 2 wins and 2 losses each.  They find themselves 4th and 3rd on the log respectively.  The 4th XI are certainly pushing for league honours, as they find themselves 2nd on the log, with 3 wins and 1 loss out of their 4 matches.

Craig Beckwith and the 3A's have are showing signs of changes, and will look at 2011 as an opportunity to pick up a few more wins for the season.

R20 000 Draw

The draw was once again lots of hard work from the Cricket Committee.  The night proved to be an entertaining evening with three very happy winners on the night.  The section would like to thank all who supported the event as well as sponsors for the day.

The winners were as follows:
1st Prize: Mo Brett - R20 000
2nd Prize: Gio Colussi - R3000
3rd Prize: Andre Geldenhuys - R1000
Cograts to them all and hope to see you all at next years' R20 000 Draw!

CREESE CUP 2011

The section is in the planning phase of the Creese Cup, one of the oldest internal club tournaments. This allows all cricket section teams to compete against each other, as well as other club sporting sections.
A handicap system is put in place to level the playing fields on the day.
The date set aside is Sunday 9 Jan, so all team captains are to get their teams together.  For more info, please contact Kenny Childs at kenchilds@yebo.co.za or Nic Pullen at pllnic007@gmail.com

Junior Cricket Section

INFORMATION BROCHURE

  2010/2011 Season

Although general membership of the Club is open to all, the Junior Cricket Section must limit the number of cricket playing members in each age group.  This is set by the Committee and is based on the number of teams entered into leagues and on the availability of fields.  If a member does not attend practice, without an apology, the committee reserves the right to arrange a replacement.

Membership to the mini cricket, U/10 and U/11 are accepted on a first come, first served basis.   U/12 and above must apply and be invited to attend a practice and qualify, before being accepted into the Cricket Section.

The Junior Cricket Levy for 2010/2011 season is R550. Please note that this fee covers the coaching every Friday, balls and pitch preparation.   In addition, the junior must become a member of the Western Province Cricket Club.   Please contact the Membership Office to arrange this.

The Club strictly enforces the “No Pay = No Play” policy.   If the subscription and section levy has not been paid the use of the Club’s facilities is prohibited.

Cricket Members are requested to present their WPCC membership card to the Team Manager or Coach at the start of each practice session, the card will be returned at the end of practice.

Availability for Selection

All juniors who enrol for Friday afternoon coaching must be available for selection every Saturday of the season.  This means that if a junior plays for their school on Saturday’s they are not permitted to participate in practices or matches of the WPCC Cricket Section.

Age Groups

The youth structure in the Province operates from January to December. The cut off date is 31st December Eg: A player turning 16 in the year is not allowed to play U/15 at any stage during the year.

Selection Policy for Youth Cricket

Mini Cricket (6 - 9 Yrs)

All players must be given an opportunity to play with rotation of batting and bowling.

U/10 – U/11

There is no “A” or “B” in these age groups.   All players must be given an opportunity to play for the Club enforced by rotation of batting and bowling.   Both teams play in the Premier League, therefore they will rotate weekly to play the stronger opposition.

U/12 – U/19

“A” Team: This is the strongest team and is made up of specialist players, namely opening bowlers and opening batsmen, wicket keeper, and all rounders. It is important not to limit any player’s horizon, but rather to nurture talent.

“B” Team: Emphasis must be placed on rotation. Every player must be given an opportunity to play. The “B” team managers have a more demanding duty in that they must identify cricketers who have reached a high enough level to break into the “A” team. These cricketers should make up the core of the “B” team.

The selection Co-ordinator (Mogamad Buffkins) oversees this process. Complaints must be directed to him. If necessary he will direct it to the Committee.

Selection Hierarchy: Players for the U/19 are selected first. In the event of a withdrawal a replacement will be taken from a lower team down to U/15 where 65 over games are played. The chairperson of Youth Cricket has in conjunction with the selections convenor an “ex Officio” position in terms of selection.

U/14 – U/19:                                          17h30 – 19h00

Players are expected to be ready for practice at least 10 minutes prior to the starting time.   Latecomers will not be allowed to join the practice as this disrupts the coaching. There will be occasions when a player cannot avoid being late. In such cases a “late slip” will be issued by the Convenor of Managers provided he is phoned before the practice starts.

It is important that parents understand that there is no supervision for latecomers and they will not be allowed to join coaching
